Switzerland’s Largest Lake-Side Nature Reserve

Right on your doorstep lies a true natural paradise: LA GRANDE CARIÇAIE, Switzerland’s largest lakeside wetland area. It spans nearly 3,000 hectares along the southern shore of Lake Neuchâtel and is internationally recognized as a natural area of exceptional biodiversity.
Hiking and biking trails wind through peaceful reed beds and forests—a refuge for more than 800 plant species and 10,000 animal species.
The nature centers at CHAMP-PITTET in Yverdon-les-Bains and LA SAUGE in Cudrefin offer a fascinating glimpse into this remarkable ecosystem.
Just a 15-minute walk away, in Font, lies the nearest FINE-SAND BEACH. In the shade of fragrant pine trees, a long wooden walkway extends into the lake—an ideal spot for swimming and relaxing

On the south shore—among vineyards, marinas, and a Caribbean vibe

An hour’s walk from La Vuardaz brings you to CHEYRES. There you’ll discover the only vineyard on the south shore of Lake Neuchâtel situated on molasse soil, producing particularly fruity wines that are typical of the region. A WINE TRAIL lets you explore the different stages of wine production throughout the seasons. CHEVROUX is a 40-minute bike ride from the hotel. Europe’s largest inland port charms visitors with its remarkable wooden pier and its EDUCATIONAL TRAIL that winds through the nature reserve. In GLETTERENS, a little further north, the LAKE VILLAGE has been reconstructed on the ruins of AUTHENTIC NEOLITHIC DWELLINGS. It’s a place where history comes alive. Gletterens is also renowned for its beach, nestled in the heart of the nature reserve: white sand and turquoise waters make you feel as if you’re on a seaside vacation. Even when temperatures are cooler, swimming in the lake is still possible. For those who prefer warm waters, a trip to YVERDON-LES-BAINS is a must. Here, thermal water naturally flows from the spring at 29 °C. This historic SPA town was already known to the Romans and is just a 20-minute drive from La Vuardaz.

From Estavayer-le-Lac to Neuchâtel and the Val-de-Travers

The medieval town of ESTAVAYER-LE-LAC, a 30-minute walk away, charms visitors with its cobblestone streets, rose gardens, and the imposing Château de Chenaux.
Here, history, art, and joie de vivre come together: the ARTICHOKE FESTIVAL transforms the town throughout the year into an open-air art gallery, featuring murals, sculptures, and installations.
The one-of-a-kind MUSÉE DES GRENOUILLES houses an astonishing collection of taxidermied frogs depicted in everyday situations—which is where the museum gets its name. For lovers of theatre and concerts, L’AZIMUT and LA PRILLAZ are two hidden gems: authentic, welcoming venues with an intimate atmosphere that also bring internationally renowned artists to Estavayer. L’Azimut is particularly known for its concerts, while La Prillaz is known for its theatre season.

Estavayer is also a major hub for water sports in Switzerland and boasts the country’s longest water ski lift. The ALPHASURF SPORTS CENTER, located at Nouvelle Plage, offers a wide range of water sports activities. Boats for the THREE-LAKES CRUISE also depart from Estavayer—a pleasant excursion on Lakes Neuchâtel, Morat, and Biel, for which we recommend setting aside a full day.
Across from Estavayer lies the picturesque city of NEUCHÂTEL, with its urban elegance, which can be reached in just over an hour by boat or 40 minutes by car. On the lakeshore, the LATÉNIUM, Switzerland’s largest archaeological museum, invites visitors on a fascinating journey through the history of the region.
From Neuchâtel, set out to explore the VAL-DE-TRAVERS and the “Grand Canyon of Switzerland”: the CREUX-DU-VAN, in the heart of the Jura Nature Reserve. From the picturesque village of Noiraigue, a magnificent HIKING TRAIL begins, allowing you to explore this spectacular site.
A few kilometers further west in the valley, the historic village of MÔTIERS invites you to explore the MAISON DE L’ABSINTHE, the legacy of philosopher JEAN-JACQUES ROUSSEAU, and the remarkable open-air exhibition ART MÔTIERS.

Avenches – Roman History and Former Capital

Just a 20-minute drive from La Vuardaz, AVENCHES invites you to discover the Roman treasures of Aventicum, the ancient capital of the Helvetii. The ROMAN MUSEUM and the amphitheater bear witness to a rich and remarkably well-preserved history. Avenches is also home to the SWISS NATIONAL STUD FARM, a cultural heritage site and a true center of equine knowledge.

A few kilometers away, the ROMAN MUSEUM OF VALLON allows visitors to admire magnificent Roman mosaics, including “Bacchus and Ariadne,” which bear witness to the region’s wealthy past.

In Payerne, the ABBEY church is well worth a visit. A major masterpiece of Romanesque architecture, it is the largest Romanesque church in Switzerland. The historic old town, with its medieval towers, adds another chapter to the history of the Broye.

Bern—Switzerland’s capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site

About a 45-minute drive from La Vuardaz, the SWISS CAPITAL welcomes you with its unique Old Town, designated a UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE.
Its famous arcades, the Zytglogge, the Bear Park, and its exceptional location on the banks of the Aare River shape the city’s unmistakable character.
A major cultural and EDUCATIONAL HUB, Bern invites you to make inspiring discoveries. The PAUL KLEE CENTER is dedicated to the work of artist and educator Paul Klee and explores the connections between art, perception, and creative processes.
The SWISS ALPINE MUSEUM explores the relationships between humans, the landscape, and nature, as well as the many connections to the Alpine region.
On the way back to La Vuardaz, a stop in the historic town of MORAT is a must. Located halfway between La Vuardaz and Bern, its medieval old town, its walkable city walls, and its view of Lake Morat invite you to extend your stroll.
A trip to the nearby SALAVAUX SAND BEACH rounds out this excursion with a beautiful experience in the heart of nature.

From Fribourg to the Alps—where culture, gastronomy, and the mountains meet

The bilingual cantonal capital of FRIBOURG is just under 40 minutes away by car. It charms visitors with its medieval old town, historic towers, bridges, and picturesque alleyways. As a UNIVERSITY TOWN, Fribourg is a hub of linguistic diversity, knowledge, and cultural exchange. Furthermore, Fribourg was the first Swiss city to join the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) as a «CREATIVE CITY OF GASTRONOMY» and thus represents culinary tradition, regional products and gastronomic creativity on an international level.

To the south of the city lie the landscapes of the Fribourg Pre-Alps.
In BROC, the MAISON CAILLER invites you to discover the world of Swiss chocolate and enjoy a gourmet experience for all the senses.
A few kilometers further on, the picturesque town of GRUYÈRES stands majestically on a hill at the foot of the Pre-Alps. At the MAISON DU GRUYÈRE, discover the secrets behind the production of the famous Gruyère cheese. Gruyères is also home to the museum and bar of the artist and Oscar-winning filmmaker H. R. GIGER.
Towering above the region is MOLÉSON, offering a spectacular panoramic view of the Swiss Plateau and the Alps. From La Vuardaz, the ski areas of La Berra, Moléson and Charmey can all be reached in less than an hour by car, offering winter sports in the colder months and numerous hiking trails through the alpine landscape in summer.

Lavaux – the magical vineyards of Lake Geneva

LAKE LEMAN is about a 50-minute drive from La Vuardaz and is one of Switzerland’s major cultural regions.
The LAVAUX vineyard, with its approximately 10,000 terraces shaped by monks as early as the 11th century, is Switzerland’s largest contiguous vineyard. It is a UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE. Its terraces offer magnificent HIKING TRAILS, with spectacular panoramic views of Lake Geneva and the Alps. A wine trail allows visitors to explore the landscape between Lausanne and Montreux.
MONTREUX, on the shores of the lake, charms visitors with its unique promenade, as well as the famous MONTREUX JAZZ FESTIVAL, which has been bringing together artists from around the world for decades.
The cantonal capital, LAUSANNE, impresses with its wealth of cultural offerings and museums. The Collection de l’ART BRUT offers an extraordinary perspective on creativity and artistic expression, while PLATEFORME 10 brings art, photography and design together. Just a few kilometres away, in Vevey, CHAPLIN’S WORLD immerses visitors in the life, films and unmistakable world of Charlie Chaplin.
